Crappie USA Tournament Results For Kentucky and Barkley Lakes at Paris, Tennessee
Kentucky and Barkley Lakes played host to the Crappie USA Event this past Saturday, September 24,
2016. Over 160 anglers, with 84 boats and 2 kayaks from several different states were competing for not
only the $13,125.00 in cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA
Classic. This year's classic will be held October 27 – 29, 2016 again on Kentucky & Barkley Lakes at
Pro Division Results
Sunny skies and humid conditions with temperatures in the 90's all day saw a wonderful turnout for the
event leading up to the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic next month. The day also saw Shane Moore of
Milan, Tennessee and John Eubanks of Trenton, Tennessee take first place in the Pro Division with a
total weight of 10.91 pounds and earning $2,200.00. The team fished Paris Landing area very close to the
weigh-in site. Shane and John were using multiple color jigs, all were tipped with Johnson Crappie
Nibbles in 9 – 11 feet of water to land 80 -100 fish for the day. John stated that “if the nibble came off, you
were not going to get another bite”.
Wind speeds varied on Saturday out of the East between 5 – 10mph, but Cliff Edwards of Murray,
Kentucky and Jerry Trimble of Hardin, Kentucky stayed steady, taking second place with a total weight of
9.9 pounds and earning $1,100.00. The team fished the North end of Barkley Lake in 22 – 24 feet of
water over man-made cover using Chartreuse jigs tipped with live bait to land 24 keepers for the event.
In third place was Tim Blackley of Hornbeak, Tennessee and Jackie Van Cleave of Samburg, Tennessee
weighing in at 9.86 pounds and earning $875.00, plus an additional $500.00 for 2nd place Big Fish. The
team fished Eagle Creek in 11 – 15 feet of water using Bluegrass color jigs that were tipped with live bait
to catch over 100 fish on Saturday. The teams 2nd place Big Fish weighed in at 1.84 pounds.
Mike Johnson of Milan, Tennessee and Brad Essary of Brownsville, Tennessee took fourth place with a
total weight of 9.76 pounds and earning $600.00. The team fished in 9 – 22 feet of water using jigs of
various colors that were tipped with minnows to land over 60 fish for the day.
In fifth place was Dewayne, Robert and Reed McCord all of Wingo, Kentucky weighing in at 9.56 pounds
and earning $500.00, plus an additional $250.00 Ranger Cup Bonus. The team fished Cypress Creek to
the North end of Kentucky Lake in 15 feet of water early in the day and moving to 22 feet of water later
Saturday afternoon. The team used crank baits and some minnows to land their fish. Team McCord also
won the Ranger Cup Bonus.
Matthew and Brandon Tosh won Big Fish honors with a 1.96 pounder for $1,100.00.
Ronald and Terry Barker won the Talon Award for $250.00.
Amateur Division Results
Kris and Terry Mann took first place in the Amateur Division with a total weight of 8.84 pounds and
earning $1,200.00, plus an additional $250.00 Ranger Cup Bonus. The Mt. Sterling, Kentucky team fished
Blood River to Big Sandy area of Kentucky Lake in 12 – 18 feet of water. Kris and Terry said the bite was
over by noon, but they were still able to catch over 200 fish for the day with over 80 keepers using
Crappie magnet pumpkin seed color jigs.
In second place was Sonny Sipes of Moody, Alabama and Ronnie Bleas of Ohatchee, Alabama with a
total weight of 8.72 pounds and earning $700.00. The team fished all over the mid section of the lake in
20 feet of water using live bait to land over 100 fish for the event.
Taking third place was David and Jerry Rodgers both of Georgetown, Kentucky weighing in at 8.52
pounds and earning $500.00. Unfortunately the team left before we could find out their fishing secrets.
Tyler Morrow and Zack Clapp both of Mayfield, Kentucky took fourth place of the tournament with a total
weight of 8.46 pounds and earning $400.00. The team fished North of Paris Landing bridge in 15 – 20
feet of water, pulling blue/silver Crappie crank baits to catch over 60 fish for the day.
In fifth place was Jimmy Riley, Jr and David Butler both of Benton, Kentucky weighing in at 8.15 pounds
and earning $300.00. The team fished the North end of Kentucky Lake in 18 – 20 feet of water with heavy
wood cover using live bait to land over 150 fish for the tournament.
All the teams should be commended for taking excellent care of their catch in the high water temperatures
that was 84 degrees on Saturday. It took a little extra effort to get the fish to the tri-toon release boat
where oxygenated water helped the fish recover to fight again.
Kayak Division Results
Corey Wilkerson of Jacksonville, Alabama took first place in the Kayak Division with an 11 1/2 inch
crappie and earned $100.00.
Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo
In conjunction with the tournament, Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several
children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00
scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic.
Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $334,000.00 to the “Crappie Kids” Scholarships
since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in
our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.
